In the upset of the tournament, Maegashira Shotenro defeated Yokozuna Hakuho to win his
first kinboshi ('gold star' for beating a yokozuna). Despite joining sumo at the same time as
the Yokozuna, Shotenro has followed a more moderate route, taking 8 years to reach
makuuchi division, rather than the three years taken by Hakuho.
Shotenro's ambition since his makuuchi promotion has been to meet Hakuho in the ring.
In the event it was a particularly memorable encounter.
