Goeido had a brilliant Haru Basho, scoring 12-3 and winning the fighting spirit prize. Gagamaru, who was
making his komusubi debut, had the usual torrid first week for a komusubi with bouts against the Yokozuna,
all 5 ozeki and soon-to-be-promoted Kakuryu. Having taken a score of 1-7 into the second week of the
tournament, he managed to recover to 6-9 overall. Veteran Wakanosato had a moderate basho with
8-7 at a low maegashira rank.
