Reaching for the heights

> View Morph <

Nineteen year old Ito Baraki qualified for a place in professional sumo in January of this year by only the narrowest
of margins - he had to stand on the tips of his toes in order to meet the minimum height requirement.
At the recent Kyushu Basho he was runner-up in sandanme division and looks set for promotion to makushita.

Makuuchi veteran Toyonoshima, also at the lower end of the height range, has demonstrated that with good technique
a shorter man can have a successful sumo career. On a good day he is capable of beating any of the top ranked rikishi.

If Baraki is to reach the heights, he could do worse than to use Toyonoshima as a role model.
