Ozeki by stealth
> View Morph <
Normal guidelines for promotion to ozeki from a sanyaku rank require 33 wins over three tournaments. The authorities
are usually not too keen to promote the rikishi if he had a poor score in one of the tournaments. Coming off an
excellent 12-3 in March and a rather less than excellent 8-7 in May, Goeido was not declared to be "making
an ozeki run" before the recent Nagoya Basho began.
On the final day of the tournament in which Goeido was on top form, beating two of the three Yokozuna and racking up 11
wins by the end of day 14, it was announced that a final day win over Ozeki Kotoshogiku would seal promotion for Goeido.
He won and was duly promoted.
