Barefoot gyoji

Japanese society is very hierarchical and this is strongly reflected in sumo. One aspect of
this is that the costume worn by a gyoji is directly related to his rank. His rank governs the
quality and styling of the material of the costume, the colour of the rosettes and tassles,
and his footwear; gyoji ranked below juryo division must officiate barefoot.
