After six rounds of bouts in makushita division in the recent Hatsu Basho, former sekitori Tochihiryu and Kasugano
Beya stablemate Tochimaru shared the lead on 6-0. If either rikishi had won his final bout, he could
have taken the yusho there and then. If both rikishi had won, a simple 2 way play-off would have ensued.
In the event Tochihiryu lost on day 12 to Dewahayate and Tochimaru lost on day 13 to Terutsuyoshi.
That meant that on the final day of the tournament we had an 8 way play-off, won by Tochimaru.
