Kotoyuki was at his highest ever rank, Maegashira #1, at the recent Haru Basho. Far from
shrinking from the challenge of facing all the highest ranking rikishi for the first time, he
had a breakout basho where he scored 12-3, beat a Yokozuna, two Ozeki plus all the
lower sanyaku rikishi and took the Outstanding Performance Prize.
He demonstrated a no-fear attitude in all his bouts, which extended to continuing with his bark/
hoot in the pre-bout warmup, despite previously being told to desist by Yokozuna Hakuho.
