Veteran Okinoumi and relative newcomer Shodai were ranked at Maegashira #1 and #2 for the recent Aki Basho
and faced two Yokozuna and all four Ozeki.
Okinoumi enjoyed a glittering first week, winning two kinboshi (gold star for beating the Yokozuna) and defeating
three of the ozeki. He picked up just a single loss, to the eventual tournament winner Goeido. He then appeared to go
into freefall in week two, losing five consecutive bouts and just saved the situation by winning on the last two days
to get a 9-6 record and secure a tournament prize.
Shodai had a miserable first week, losing against all the big guns and managing only a single win on day eight. In
contrast, his second week was a tour de force, with only a single loss. His final score of 7-8 was perfectly
respectable for a newcomer at his high banzuke rank.
